How to Detangle Hair Without Breakage
Work from ends to roots with wet hair, good slip, and patience.
People rush this and wonder why their hair breaks—it's like trying to unknot jewelry with pliers instead of patience.
- Saturate with water or leave-in. Wet hair stretches better and breaks less. Spray thoroughly or work through a leave-in conditioner until every strand feels slippery.
- Start at the very ends. Hold sections at mid-length to prevent pulling at the scalp. Work through the bottom inch first, then move up gradually.
- Use your fingers first. Gently separate major tangles by hand before touching a brush. Your fingers can feel resistance better than any tool.
- Switch to a wide-tooth comb. Metal or seamless plastic works best. Comb in small sections, always working upward from the ends you just cleared.
- Finish with a wet brush if needed. Only after most tangles are gone. The flexible bristles will catch remaining knots without snapping strands.
