How to Use Sulfate-Free Shampoo Properly

Sulfate-free shampoo requires more product and longer massage time to create a different kind of clean that protects your hair's natural oils.

1. Wet hair thoroughly. Use warm water to completely saturate your hair from roots to ends. Sulfate-free formulas need more water to activate properly than traditional shampoos.
2. Use more product than usual. Apply twice the amount you'd use with regular shampoo. Sulfate-free formulas are concentrated but don't foam as much, so you need more to cover all your hair.
3. Massage for longer. Work the shampoo into your scalp for 60-90 seconds instead of the usual 30. The gentler surfactants need more time to lift dirt and oil without harsh detergents.
4. Rinse completely. Spend extra time rinsing to remove all product residue. Sulfate-free shampoos can leave a film if not thoroughly rinsed, making hair feel heavy or greasy.
