How to Trim Split Ends Without Losing Length
Use the twist method to isolate damaged ends, then snip only the white dots and frayed pieces with sharp haircutting shears.
This is maintenance, not vanity. Split ends are structural damage that only gets worse, so address them before they force dramatic cuts.
- Start with clean, dry hair. Wash and completely dry your hair first. Split ends are easier to see on clean hair, and wet hair stretches differently than dry hair, making accurate cutting impossible.
- Section and twist small pieces. Take a thin section about the width of your finger and twist it tightly from mid-length to ends. The damaged ends will stick out from the twist like little white flags.
- Snip only the damaged bits. Use sharp haircutting shears to cut only the protruding split ends, not the entire twisted section. Cut about 1/8 inch above each split to prevent immediate re-splitting.
- Work systematically through all hair. Continue twisting and trimming section by section around your entire head. This takes time but preserves maximum length while removing all the damage.
