How to Use a Wide Tooth Comb Without Destroying Your Hair

Start at the ends and work upward in small sections while hair is damp and protected with leave-in conditioner.

Most people comb like they're trying to win a speed contest, then wonder why their hair looks like it survived a small explosion.

  1. Prep wet hair. Apply leave-in conditioner or detangling spray to damp hair from mid-length to ends. Never comb bone-dry hair unless you enjoy breakage.
  2. Section and start low. Divide hair into manageable sections. Begin combing at the very ends, holding the section above where you're combing to prevent pulling at the roots.
  3. Work upward gradually. Move the comb up only after the lower section detangles completely. This prevents forcing knots down the hair shaft and creating bigger tangles.
  4. Use gentle tension. Let the comb do the work rather than forcing it through resistant areas. Pause at snags and gently work through them with short, light strokes.
