How to Use a Wide Tooth Comb Without Destroying Your Hair
Start at the ends and work upward in small sections while hair is damp and protected with leave-in conditioner.
Most people comb like they're trying to win a speed contest, then wonder why their hair looks like it survived a small explosion.
- Prep wet hair. Apply leave-in conditioner or detangling spray to damp hair from mid-length to ends. Never comb bone-dry hair unless you enjoy breakage.
- Section and start low. Divide hair into manageable sections. Begin combing at the very ends, holding the section above where you're combing to prevent pulling at the roots.
- Work upward gradually. Move the comb up only after the lower section detangles completely. This prevents forcing knots down the hair shaft and creating bigger tangles.
- Use gentle tension. Let the comb do the work rather than forcing it through resistant areas. Pause at snags and gently work through them with short, light strokes.
