How to Add Lowlights at Home for Natural Dimension
Use a hair color one to two shades darker than your natural color, apply with foils to select strands throughout your hair, focusing on underneath sections for subtle depth.
Most people place lowlights too close to their face when they should be creating shadow underneath—think about where hair naturally falls darker, not where you want drama.
- Choose your shade. Pick a permanent hair color one to two shades darker than your current color. Avoid going more than two shades darker or you'll create harsh contrasts instead of natural dimension.
- Section and prepare. Part your hair into four quadrants and clip up three sections. Start with the bottom back section, working on clean, dry hair. Cut foil pieces into 4-inch strips.
- Apply strategically. Take thin vertical sections about pencil-width, starting underneath where lowlights create the most natural shadow effect. Apply color from mid-length to ends, avoiding the roots for a more grown-out look.
- Foil and process. Fold each foil packet securely and continue taking sections every inch or so throughout the underneath layers. Process according to box instructions, usually 25-35 minutes.
