Face-Framing Highlights at Home

Use a highlighting cap or foil pieces around your hairline, applying lightener only to sections that frame your face.

Face-framing highlights are the gateway drug to full-head color disasters, but done right, they're the most flattering five minutes you can spend in your bathroom.

  1. Section your hair. Part your hair down the middle and identify the pieces that naturally fall around your face. These are typically 1-2 inch sections from your temples to just past your ears. Clip the rest of your hair away.
  2. Apply the lightener. Mix your highlighting kit according to package directions. Apply the lightener to small subsections using the brush provided, working from mid-length to ends first, then closer to roots. Stay at least half an inch away from your scalp.
  3. Process and rinse. Follow the timing on your kit exactly—usually 20-45 minutes depending on desired lightness and your starting color. Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water, then shampoo and condition as directed.
