How to Do Peek-a-Boo Color Underneath
Section off the bottom layer of hair, bleach if needed, apply your color choice with foils or freehand, then let your top layer fall naturally over it.
- Section the hair. Part your hair horizontally from ear to ear, about two inches above your nape. Clip the top section away completely. The bottom section should be thin enough that it won't show when your hair is down but thick enough to peek through when you move.
- Prep for color. If you're going lighter than your natural color, bleach the sectioned hair first following package directions. For darker or similar tones, you can often apply color directly. Always do a strand test first.
- Apply the color. Work the color through your sectioned hair with a brush or your hands, depending on the formula. Use foils if you want crisp lines, or go freehand for a more lived-in look. Process according to timing instructions.
- Rinse and style. Rinse thoroughly with cool water until it runs clear. Let your top layer down and style as usual. The color should only show when you move or put your hair up.
