How to Do Reverse Balayage from Blonde to Deeper
Reverse balayage uses lowlights painted onto blonde hair to create natural-looking depth and dimension without traditional foils.
- Section and prep. Part hair into four quadrants and clip away. Mix your lowlight color two shades deeper than your current blonde base. Work on damp, towel-dried hair for better color absorption.
- Paint the lowlights. Using a tint brush, paint vertical strokes of color onto random sections, focusing on mid-lengths to ends. Keep strokes irregular and avoid the hairline for the most natural look.
- Blend and soften. Use your fingers or a wide-tooth comb to gently diffuse harsh lines while the color is still wet. This creates the seamless gradient that makes reverse balayage look effortless.
- Process and rinse. Follow your color's processing time, then rinse with cool water. Use a color-safe shampoo and deep condition to seal the cuticles and lock in the new tones.
