How to Create Shadow Roots at Home
Shadow roots are created by applying darker color to your natural root area, then blending it down into lighter lengths for a seamless gradient.
- Section and prepare. Part your hair into four quadrants and clip each section. Apply petroleum jelly around your hairline to prevent staining. Mix your darker shade according to package directions.
- Apply root color. Starting at the crown, apply darker color to your roots using a tint brush, working in half-inch sections. Keep application within one to two inches of your scalp for a natural shadow effect.
- Blend the gradient. Use a clean, damp brush to gently feather the color downward where it meets your lighter lengths. Work quickly before the color sets to create a seamless transition.
- Process and rinse. Follow your product's processing time, then rinse with cool water until it runs clear. Apply the included conditioner and style as usual.
