How to Create Shadow Roots at Home

Shadow roots are created by applying darker color to your natural root area, then blending it down into lighter lengths for a seamless gradient.

  1. Section and prepare. Part your hair into four quadrants and clip each section. Apply petroleum jelly around your hairline to prevent staining. Mix your darker shade according to package directions.
  2. Apply root color. Starting at the crown, apply darker color to your roots using a tint brush, working in half-inch sections. Keep application within one to two inches of your scalp for a natural shadow effect.
  3. Blend the gradient. Use a clean, damp brush to gently feather the color downward where it meets your lighter lengths. Work quickly before the color sets to create a seamless transition.
  4. Process and rinse. Follow your product's processing time, then rinse with cool water until it runs clear. Apply the included conditioner and style as usual.
