How to Tone Orange Bleached Hair
Use a blue-based toner to neutralize orange tones, applying it to damp hair and processing until the brassiness disappears.
- Choose your toner shade. Select a blue-based toner if your hair is pulling orange, or a blue-violet mix for orange-yellow tones. The deeper the orange, the stronger the blue base you need.
- Prepare your hair. Shampoo with a clarifying shampoo and towel dry until damp. Your hair should be clean but not dripping wet for even toner distribution.
- Mix and apply toner. Follow the ratio on your toner package, usually 1:2 toner to developer. Apply quickly from roots to ends using a brush, working in sections.
- Monitor the process. Check every 5 minutes by wiping a small section clean. Process until orange tones neutralize but don't over-process or you'll get muddy color.
- Rinse and condition. Rinse with cool water until it runs clear, then apply a deep conditioner. Your hair will be fragile after double processing.
