How to Add Underlights for Hair Contrast

Underlights are hidden color panels placed underneath your hair that peek through when you move, creating subtle contrast without commitment.

  1. Section the underlay. Part your hair horizontally from ear to ear, about two inches above your nape. Clip the top section away. You want a clean horizontal line that sits where your hair naturally falls when down.
  2. Choose your placement width. Select a 2-3 inch wide section directly underneath your part. This will be your color zone. Too wide and it becomes obvious, too narrow and it disappears completely.
  3. Apply temporary color. Use hair chalk, wash-out color, or clip-in colored extensions on this sectioned area. Work the product through from roots to ends, ensuring even saturation. The key is complete coverage within your marked section.
  4. Blend and release. Let down your top layer and check the peek-through effect as you move your head. The color should flash subtly when you turn or flip your hair, not dominate your overall look.
