How to Dye Hair at Home Without Damage
Prepare hair properly, choose quality products, follow timing precisely, and deep condition before and after.
The difference between salon and box color isn't just skill—it's knowing when to stop.
- Test and prepare. Patch test 48 hours before dyeing. Wash hair 24-48 hours prior so natural oils protect your scalp. Never dye freshly washed hair.
- Section methodically. Divide dry hair into four quadrants, then smaller sections as you work. Apply color from roots to mid-length first, then pull through ends in the final 10 minutes.
- Monitor timing strictly. Set multiple timers and check color every 5 minutes after the halfway point. Hair processes faster when warm, slower when cold.
- Rinse and condition. Rinse with lukewarm water until it runs clear. Apply the included conditioner or a deep treatment immediately while hair is still damp.
