How to Go From Dark to Light Hair

Going from dark to light hair requires multiple bleaching sessions spaced weeks apart, followed by toning to achieve your desired shade.

Most people underestimate how much patience this process requires—rushing it means you'll end up with straw instead of hair, and straw doesn't hold color beautifully.

  1. Start with a strand test. Test bleach on a hidden section first to see how your hair responds. This tells you how many sessions you'll need and prevents major disasters.
  2. Bleach in sections. Apply bleach to dry, unwashed hair starting from the ends and working up. Leave midlengths and roots for last since they process faster due to scalp heat.
  3. Monitor the lift. Check every 10 minutes but don't exceed 45 minutes total. You're aiming for pale yellow, not white—overprocessing leads to breakage.
  4. Rinse and assess. Use cool water and a gentle shampoo. Your hair will likely be orange or brassy after the first session, which is normal for dark hair.
  5. Deep condition and wait. Use protein treatments if hair feels mushy, moisture masks if it feels dry. Wait at least two weeks before the next bleaching session.
  6. Repeat until pale yellow. Most dark hair needs 2-3 sessions to reach a pale yellow base. Each session should lift 1-2 levels maximum.
  7. Tone to your target shade. Use a toner to neutralize yellow and achieve your final color. Purple toners create platinum, orange toners create warm blondes.
