How to Keep Blonde Hair From Turning Brassy at Home
Use purple shampoo weekly, deep condition religiously, and protect from heat and sun to maintain clean blonde tones.
Blonde hair is high-maintenance by design, so either commit to the routine or choose a color that grows out gracefully.
- Purple shampoo once a week. Apply purple shampoo to damp hair, leave for 3-5 minutes, then rinse thoroughly. The purple pigments neutralize yellow and orange tones that make blonde look muddy. Start with once weekly and adjust based on how your hair responds.
- Deep condition every wash. Blonde hair is chemically processed and inherently more porous, so it loses moisture faster. Apply a protein-free deep conditioner from mid-length to ends, leave for 10 minutes, then rinse. This prevents breakage and maintains shine.
- Use heat protection religiously. Apply a heat protectant spray before any hot tool use, and keep temperatures under 350°F. Blonde hair has less natural protection and burns easily, leading to an ashy or orange cast that's hard to fix at home.
- Protect from chlorine and sun. Wet your hair with clean water before swimming to minimize chlorine absorption, and wear a hat in strong sun. Both chlorine and UV rays can turn blonde green or yellow within hours.
