How to Use Purple Shampoo Without Turning Your Hair Gray
Use purple shampoo once or twice weekly on wet hair, leave for 2-5 minutes, then follow with regular conditioner to neutralize brassiness without over-toning.
Purple shampoo is not a daily shampoo—it's a weekly treatment that most people use wrong by overthinking the process.
- Start with wet hair. Thoroughly saturate hair with lukewarm water before applying purple shampoo. Wet hair distributes the product more evenly and prevents patchy toning. Skip if your hair is already soaking wet from your previous wash.
- Apply sparingly. Use a quarter-sized amount for shoulder-length hair, less for shorter styles. Purple shampoo is concentrated—too much will deposit excess pigment and create muddy tones. Work through from mid-length to ends first, avoiding roots unless they're noticeably brassy.
- Time it precisely. Leave on for 2-3 minutes for maintenance, up to 5 minutes for stubborn brassiness. Set a timer because guessing leads to over-processing. Blonde hair processes faster than highlighted hair, so adjust accordingly.
- Rinse and condition. Rinse thoroughly with cool water until it runs clear, then follow with your regular conditioner. Purple shampoo is clarifying and can be drying, so conditioning is non-negotiable. Focus conditioner on ends where hair is most porous.
