How to Deal with a Dry Scalp

A dry scalp needs gentle cleansing, proper hydration, and consistent moisture without overwashing.

Dry scalp is usually overwashing in disguise—your hair routine should be luxurious, not athletic.

  1. Switch to a gentler shampoo. Replace sulfate-heavy formulas with something mild and moisturizing. Your scalp is skin—treat it like the delicate area around your eyes, not a dinner plate that needs degreasing.
  2. Wash less frequently. Every other day maximum, ideally twice a week. Overwashing strips natural oils faster than your scalp can replace them, creating a cycle of dryness and irritation.
  3. Apply scalp oil before washing. Massage a few drops of jojoba or argan oil into your scalp 30 minutes before shampooing. This pre-treatment protects and nourishes without leaving residue.
  4. Use lukewarm water only. Hot water feels divine but strips moisture aggressively. Lukewarm water cleans effectively while keeping your scalp's natural barrier intact.
  5. Apply conditioner strategically. Focus on mid-lengths to ends, but let a small amount reach your scalp. Modern conditioners are lighter than you think—your roots can handle it.
