How to Stop Winter Hair Static
Static happens when dry winter air strips moisture from your hair, so you need to add humidity back through products and environment.
- Use a humidifier. Place one in your bedroom and main living space. Dry indoor air is the root cause of static, and humidifiers restore the moisture your hair needs to behave. Aim for 40-50% humidity.
- Switch to sulfate-free shampoo. Sulfates strip natural oils that protect against static. Use a gentle cleanser 2-3 times per week maximum in winter. Your hair needs those oils to create a barrier against dry air.
- Apply leave-in conditioner daily. Focus on mid-lengths to ends while hair is slightly damp. This creates a protective layer that holds moisture and prevents friction. Reapply lightly throughout the day if needed.
- Use natural fiber tools. Replace plastic combs with wood or horn, synthetic brushes with boar bristle. Natural materials don't create the electrical charge that plastic does. Run a dryer sheet over brushes before use.
- Dry hair properly. Use ionic blow dryers on low heat with a heat protectant. Finish with cool air to seal the cuticle. Air drying is better but takes longer in winter humidity levels.
