How to Remove Product Build-Up from Hair Lengths

Use a clarifying shampoo weekly and focus the cleansing on mid-lengths and ends where products accumulate most.

  1. Pre-cleanse with oil. Work a lightweight oil through dry hair from mid-lengths to ends. This dissolves silicones and styling products that water-based cleansers struggle with. Leave for five minutes.
  2. Apply clarifying shampoo to lengths. Skip your scalp and focus the clarifying shampoo on the areas where you apply styling products. Work it through thoroughly with your fingers, not just your palms.
  3. Rinse with cool water. Hot water opens the hair cuticle and makes product residue harder to remove. Cool water seals everything shut and rinses cleaner.
  4. Follow with lightweight conditioner. Apply conditioner only to the ends after clarifying. Your lengths are already clean and adding too much moisture will weigh them down again.
