How to Care for Curly Hair
Curly hair needs moisture, gentle handling, and the right products to define curls without weighing them down.
- Wash less frequently. Shampoo only 1-2 times per week to avoid stripping natural oils. Focus shampoo on your scalp, not the lengths. Your curls need those oils to stay defined and frizz-free.
- Condition properly. Apply conditioner from mid-length to ends, never the roots. Use a wide-tooth comb to detangle while the conditioner is in. This is the only time you should comb curly hair.
- Apply products to wet hair. Work leave-in conditioner and curl cream through soaking wet hair using the praying hands method. Wet hair distributes product evenly and helps curls clump together naturally.
- Dry without disrupting. Gently squeeze out excess water with a microfiber towel or cotton t-shirt. Never rub or use a regular terry cloth towel. Air dry or use a diffuser on low heat, low speed.
- Sleep smart. Use a silk or satin pillowcase to reduce friction. Pineapple your hair loosely at the very top of your head with a silk scrunchie, or sleep with a silk bonnet.
