How to Prevent Split Ends
Split ends form when the hair cuticle breaks down from friction, heat, and dehydration — prevent them by minimizing damage and keeping ends moisturized.
Split ends are inevitable if you want to keep your hair past shoulder length, so the goal isn't perfection — it's damage control through consistent maintenance.
- Sleep on silk. Cotton pillowcases create friction that roughens the hair cuticle. Silk or satin reduces this drag by 43%. Your ends stay smoother longer.
- Trim every 8-10 weeks. Split ends travel up the hair shaft like a run in stockings. Regular trims remove damaged ends before they can climb higher and create more breakage.
- Apply heat protectant below 300°F. High heat breaks down the protein structure in hair. Use a thermal protectant on damp hair and keep tools under 300°F to preserve the cuticle integrity.
- Oil the ends weekly. Hair ends are the oldest part of your strand and lack natural sebum protection. Apply a few drops of argan or jojoba oil to seal the cuticle and prevent moisture loss.
- Detangle when wet with conditioner. Wet hair stretches up to 30% before breaking. Always detangle with conditioner as a buffer, starting from ends and working up to avoid pulling damaged hair taut.
