How to Repair Damaged Hair at Home

Damaged hair needs protein, moisture, and protection through deep conditioning treatments, gentle handling, and heat reduction.

  1. Assess the damage. Touch your hair when wet and dry to identify if it feels brittle (needs protein) or stretchy (needs moisture). Split ends, breakage, and dullness are clear signs damage has occurred.
  2. Deep condition weekly. Apply a protein or moisture mask from mid-length to ends, avoiding the scalp. Leave for 15-20 minutes under a shower cap for better penetration.
  3. Trim regularly. Cut damaged ends every 6-8 weeks to prevent splits from traveling up the hair shaft. Even small trims make a significant difference in overall hair health.
  4. Reduce heat styling. Air dry when possible and use heat protectant when styling. Keep tools below 300°F and limit use to 2-3 times per week maximum.
  5. Sleep on silk. Switch to silk or satin pillowcases and scrunchies to reduce friction. This prevents further breakage while you sleep and maintains moisture levels.
