How to Stop Hair Breakage

Hair breakage stops when you eliminate mechanical damage, maintain moisture balance, and protect strands during vulnerable moments like washing and sleeping.

Breakage is almost always about what you're doing wrong, not what products you're missing.

  1. Switch to microfiber towels. Cotton towels create friction that snaps wet hair. Microfiber absorbs water without dragging strands. Press, don't rub.
  2. Detangle on wet, conditioned hair only. Start from ends, work upward with a wide-tooth comb. Conditioner provides slip that prevents snapping. Never brush dry hair aggressively.
  3. Sleep on silk or satin. Cotton pillowcases create friction overnight. Silk reduces tangling and moisture loss while you sleep. A silk scarf works if you can't change pillowcases.
  4. Deep condition weekly. Damaged hair needs protein or moisture depending on its condition. If hair feels gummy when wet, use protein. If it snaps easily, use moisture.
  5. Trim every 6-8 weeks. Split ends travel upward and cause more breakage. Regular trims prevent damage from spreading even if you're growing your hair out.
