How to Make DIY Flaxseed Hair Gel

Boil flaxseeds in water until the liquid becomes gel-like, then strain for a natural, flexible-hold hair gel.

  1. Boil the flaxseeds. Add 1/4 cup whole flaxseeds to 2 cups water in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 10-15 minutes until the water becomes thick and slimy. The mixture should coat a spoon when lifted.
  2. Strain immediately. Pour the hot mixture through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth into a clean bowl. Press the seeds gently to extract all gel, but don't let them sit or the gel will become too thick. Work quickly while hot.
  3. Cool and store. Let the gel cool completely before transferring to an airtight container. It will thicken slightly as it cools and should have a clear, jelly-like consistency that spreads easily through damp hair.
