How to Tame Frizzy Hair

Frizz happens when hair lacks moisture and the cuticle lifts, so you need to hydrate and seal the hair shaft while avoiding anything that disrupts it further.

Frizz is just your hair asking for moisture and respect—give it both and stop fighting its natural texture.

  1. Wash with intention. Use lukewarm water and a sulfate-free shampoo only on your scalp. Hot water and harsh detergents strip natural oils that keep frizz at bay. Condition from mid-length to ends, leaving it on for at least two minutes before rinsing with cool water to seal the cuticle.
  2. Apply product to wet hair. Work a leave-in conditioner or smoothing cream through damp hair, focusing on the most frizz-prone areas. Hair absorbs moisture best when wet, and this creates a protective barrier. Use a wide-tooth comb to distribute evenly without breaking the hair.
  3. Dry strategically. Squeeze excess water with a microfiber towel or cotton t-shirt instead of rubbing. If air-drying, scrunch gently and avoid touching until completely dry. If blow-drying, use a heat protectant and keep the nozzle pointing down the hair shaft to smooth the cuticle.
  4. Sleep smart. Switch to a silk or satin pillowcase to reduce friction, or wrap hair in a silk scarf. Consider a loose bun or braid to prevent tangles that lead to breakage and more frizz tomorrow.
