How to Give Your Hair a Moisture Treatment at Home
Layer a hydrating mask on damp hair, focus on mid-lengths to ends, and leave for 15-30 minutes before rinsing thoroughly.
Most people apply treatments to their roots like they're watering a plant, but your scalp makes its own oil—the lengths need the help.
- Start with clean, damp hair. Shampoo first to remove buildup that blocks moisture absorption. Towel-dry until hair is damp but not dripping. Wet hair opens the cuticle, letting treatments penetrate better.
- Apply treatment from mid-length down. Skip the roots and scalp entirely. Work the mask through with your fingers or a wide-tooth comb to distribute evenly. Your ends need the most help, so be generous there.
- Time it right. Leave for 15 minutes minimum, 30 maximum. Longer doesn't mean better with moisture treatments. Set a timer and resist the urge to extend it.
- Rinse with cool water. Use cooler water than you normally would to seal the cuticle and lock in moisture. Rinse until the water runs clear but hair still feels slightly slippery.
