How to Use Coconut Oil for Hair
Apply coconut oil to dry hair from mid-length to ends, leave for 30 minutes to overnight, then shampoo out thoroughly.
Coconut oil is not a miracle cure despite what the internet claims—it works brilliantly for some hair types and makes others look like they dunked their head in a fryer.
- Warm the oil. Scoop a quarter-size amount of solid coconut oil and rub between your palms until it melts. Cold oil sits on the surface instead of penetrating the hair shaft.
- Apply to dry hair. Work the oil through hair from mid-length to ends, avoiding the scalp unless you have very dry hair. Focus on the most damaged areas which are usually the ends.
- Set the treatment time. Leave on for 30 minutes for a quick treatment or overnight for deep conditioning. Cover with a silk scarf or shower cap to prevent transfer to pillows.
- Shampoo thoroughly. Use clarifying shampoo and wash twice if needed to remove all oil residue. Coconut oil is heavy and requires thorough cleansing to avoid greasy buildup.
