How to Use Coconut Oil for Hair

Apply coconut oil to dry hair from mid-length to ends, leave for 30 minutes to overnight, then shampoo out thoroughly.

Coconut oil is not a miracle cure despite what the internet claims—it works brilliantly for some hair types and makes others look like they dunked their head in a fryer.

  1. Warm the oil. Scoop a quarter-size amount of solid coconut oil and rub between your palms until it melts. Cold oil sits on the surface instead of penetrating the hair shaft.
  2. Apply to dry hair. Work the oil through hair from mid-length to ends, avoiding the scalp unless you have very dry hair. Focus on the most damaged areas which are usually the ends.
  3. Set the treatment time. Leave on for 30 minutes for a quick treatment or overnight for deep conditioning. Cover with a silk scarf or shower cap to prevent transfer to pillows.
  4. Shampoo thoroughly. Use clarifying shampoo and wash twice if needed to remove all oil residue. Coconut oil is heavy and requires thorough cleansing to avoid greasy buildup.
