How to Use Flaxseed Gel for Hair

Boil flaxseeds in water until the liquid becomes gel-like, strain, and apply to damp hair for natural hold and shine.

It's basically hair caviar that costs nothing and works better than most expensive gels—the kind of smart beauty hack that makes you feel slightly superior.

  1. Make the gel. Boil ¼ cup flaxseeds in 2 cups water for 10-15 minutes until the liquid turns viscous and coats a spoon. The consistency should feel slippery between your fingers.
  2. Strain immediately. Pour through a fine mesh strainer while hot, pressing the seeds to extract maximum gel. Add a few drops of essential oil if desired, then let cool completely.
  3. Apply to damp hair. Work a quarter-size amount through towel-dried hair from mid-length to ends. Scrunch for waves or smooth for sleek styles.
  4. Style and dry. Air dry or diffuse on low heat. The gel will feel slightly crunchy when dry—scrunch out the crunch with your hands for soft, defined hair.
