How to Care for Low Porosity Hair

Low porosity hair needs heat to lift the cuticles for product absorption and lightweight formulas that won't sit on top of strands.

Low porosity hair is like wearing a raincoat - everything just rolls off until you unzip it.

  1. Cleanse with clarifying intention. Use a clarifying shampoo weekly to remove buildup that low porosity hair attracts like a magnet. Follow with a gentle sulfate-free shampoo for regular washes. Your hair cuticles lie flat and trap everything on the surface.
  2. Apply heat before conditioning. Warm your deep conditioner in your palms or use a warm towel over your hair during treatment. Heat opens those stubborn cuticles so moisture can actually penetrate instead of sliding off. Steam from a hot shower works too.
  3. Choose lightweight liquids over creams. Water-based leave-ins and serums absorb better than heavy creams and butters. Look for ingredients like glycerin and hyaluronic acid that draw moisture in rather than sitting on top. Less is always more with your hair type.
  4. Rinse with cool water. End every wash with cool water to seal the cuticles you just opened. This locks in the moisture you managed to get inside and adds shine. Think of it as closing the door after you finally got inside.
