How to Define Curls Without Crunch
Layer lightweight products on damp hair, scrunch out excess water gently, and break the gel cast once hair is completely dry.
The crunch is not your enemy. It's doing exactly what it should - holding your curl pattern while it sets. Breaking the cast is the magic that separates good curls from great ones.
- Start with soaking wet hair. Apply products to hair that's dripping wet, not just damp. The water dilutes your styling products and prevents them from creating a stiff coating. If your hair starts to dry while you work, mist it again.
- Layer products strategically. Start with a leave-in conditioner, add curl cream to mid-lengths and ends, then finish with a light gel only where you need hold. Each layer should be applied to wet hair and distributed evenly with praying hands or gentle scrunching.
- Remove excess water properly. Gently squeeze out excess water with a microfiber towel or cotton t-shirt. Never rub or twist your hair. The goal is to remove water while leaving your products intact on the hair shaft.
- Air dry or diffuse on low. Let hair dry completely without touching it. If diffusing, use low heat and low speed, cupping curls gently in the diffuser bowl. Your hair will feel crunchy at first - this is normal.
- Break the cast. Once hair is 100% dry, gently scrunch with dry hands or smooth with a few drops of lightweight oil. This breaks the gel cast and reveals soft, defined curls underneath.
