How to Shield Your Hair from Heat Damage
Use heat protectant on damp hair, keep tools under 300°F, and limit heated styling to twice weekly.
- Apply heat protectant to damp hair. Work product through towel-dried hair from mid-length to ends before any heat touches it. The water content helps distribute protection evenly while creating a barrier between your hair and the tool.
- Set tools to the lowest effective temperature. Fine hair needs 250-300°F maximum, while thick or coarse hair can handle 300-350°F. Higher heat doesn't mean better results—it means more damage for the same outcome.
- Move tools continuously. Never let hot tools sit on one section for more than 3-5 seconds. Keep blow dryers moving and don't clamp flat irons in place—smooth through in one fluid motion.
- Space out heated styling sessions. Limit heat styling to 2-3 times per week maximum. Your hair needs time to recover its moisture and repair minor damage between sessions.
