How to Use Hair Oil Without Looking Greasy
Apply oil to damp hair, focus on mid-lengths to ends, and use less than you think you need.
Most people use three times too much oil because they think more equals better results. Less is literally more here.
- Start with damp hair. Apply oil to hair that's 70% dry after washing. The water dilutes the oil and helps it distribute evenly instead of sitting on top of strands.
- Use the right amount. Start with 2-3 drops for shoulder-length hair, 4-5 for longer. You can always add more, but removing excess oil requires rewashing.
- Target placement. Apply from mid-shaft to ends, avoiding the first 3 inches from your scalp. Your roots produce natural oils and don't need additional help.
- Distribution technique. Warm the oil between your palms, then rake through hair with your fingers or a wide-tooth comb. This prevents concentrated spots that look greasy.
