How to Care for Natural Hair

Natural hair thrives with moisture, gentle handling, and protective styling that works with your curl pattern, not against it.

The natural hair industry sells you complexity when what works is actually simple: clean gently, moisturize deeply, handle minimally.

  1. Cleanse without stripping. Use sulfate-free shampoos or co-wash with conditioner only. Natural hair produces less oil than straight hair, so washing 1-2 times per week prevents dryness. Focus shampoo on your scalp, not the length.
  2. Deep condition weekly. Apply a moisturizing mask from mid-length to ends after every wash. Leave for 15-30 minutes under a shower cap. Natural hair's curved structure makes it harder for oils to travel down the shaft, so you need to supplement moisture.
  3. Detangle when wet. Only detangle on wash day when hair is soaked with conditioner. Start from the ends and work up to roots using a wide-tooth comb or your fingers. Dry detangling causes breakage.
  4. Seal in moisture. Apply leave-in conditioner to damp hair, then seal with a light oil like jojoba or argan. The LOC method works: Liquid (water/leave-in), Oil, Cream. This locks moisture into the hair shaft.
  5. Sleep smart. Use a silk or satin pillowcase or bonnet to reduce friction. Cotton absorbs moisture and creates tangles. Pineapple your hair (loose ponytail at the very top) to preserve curls overnight.
  6. Trim regularly. Cut splits every 8-12 weeks to prevent damage from traveling up the hair shaft. Natural hair shows damage more easily than relaxed hair, so maintenance cuts are essential for healthy growth.
