How to Do Flat Twists
Flat twists are two-strand twists that lay flat against the scalp, created by continuously adding hair to each section as you twist along the hairline or part.
Flat twists are the thinking person's protective style—they look intentional without trying too hard and work on literally everyone.
- Prep your hair. Start with clean, damp hair that has some grip—day-old hair works perfectly. Apply a light leave-in conditioner and styling cream through your hair, focusing on the sections you'll be twisting.
- Section and part. Create clean parts with a rat-tail comb where you want your flat twists to lay. The parts determine the final shape, so take time here.
- Start the twist. Take a small section at the front of your part and divide it into two strands. Cross the right strand over the left, then continue this motion while gradually picking up more hair from the loose section with each twist.
- Keep it flat. The key is tension and direction—twist close to the scalp and pull each section taut as you add hair. Keep your hands low and twist in the direction you want the twist to lay.
- Finish the ends. When you reach the end of the section or your desired stopping point, continue twisting the remaining hair without adding more. Secure with a small elastic if needed.
