How to Do Twist Outs on Natural Hair
Twist slightly damp hair with leave-in conditioner and styling cream, let dry completely, then unravel for defined, bouncy curls.
Twist outs are the closest thing to foolproof styling natural hair has—master this and you've solved 90% of your texture problems.
- Start with clean, damp hair. Wash and condition your hair, then gently squeeze out excess water with a microfiber towel. Hair should be damp but not dripping wet—too much water dilutes your products and extends drying time unnecessarily.
- Apply your product cocktail. Work leave-in conditioner through your hair first, then add a styling cream or gel for hold. Use more product on thicker sections and less on fine areas—your hair will tell you what it needs.
- Section and twist methodically. Part hair into 8-12 sections depending on thickness and desired curl size. Twist each section tightly from root to tip, wrapping the end around your finger to secure it.
- Dry completely before touching. Air dry overnight or use a diffuser on low heat. The twist out only works if hair is bone dry—any dampness means frizz and undefined curls.
- Unravel with oil on your fingers. Add a tiny amount of lightweight oil to your fingertips before gently unraveling each twist. Separate larger curls with your fingers for volume, but stop before you create frizz.
