How to Install Clip-In Extensions Without Looking Obvious
Section your hair horizontally, clip extensions underneath each layer starting from the bottom, and blend with your natural texture.
Most people buy extensions that are too long and too perfect—go one shade lighter than you think you need and slightly shorter than your goal length.
- Prep your base. Start with day-old hair that has some texture—freshly washed hair is too slippery and won't grip the clips properly. Brush through any tangles but don't make it too smooth.
- Create your sections. Part your hair horizontally from ear to ear, about an inch above your nape. Clip the top section away—you'll be working underneath it first.
- Install the widest weft first. Take your largest clip-in piece and position it along the horizontal part you just made. Open the clips, press them close to your scalp, then snap them shut firmly.
- Layer upward strategically. Create another horizontal part about two inches above the first. Install your next pieces, working from the center outward with progressively smaller wefts.
- Add the sides and crown. Place smaller pieces around your ears and at your crown, focusing on areas where your natural hair is thinner. The clips should sit flat against your head, not pulling.
- Blend and finish. Release all your natural hair and gently finger-comb everything together. Use a wide-tooth comb if needed, but avoid aggressive brushing that could catch the clips.
