How to Keep Box Braids Fresh
Maintain box braids by cleansing your scalp weekly, moisturizing the braids and your natural hair underneath, and protecting them while you sleep.
Box braids are an investment in time and money, so treat them like expensive clothing—maintain them properly or accept that you wasted both.
- Clean your scalp weekly. Mix diluted shampoo with water in a spray bottle and apply directly to your scalp, not the braids themselves. Gently massage with your fingertips, then rinse thoroughly. This prevents buildup without disturbing the braid pattern.
- Moisturize strategically. Apply a lightweight leave-in conditioner or braid spray to the length of your braids every few days. Focus on your natural hair at the roots and where it peeks through the braids. Heavy oils will attract lint and dirt.
- Sleep with protection. Wrap your braids in a silk or satin scarf before bed, or use a satin pillowcase. This reduces friction that causes frizz and prevents your braids from getting matted while you sleep.
- Refresh your edges. Use a small amount of edge control or light gel to smooth any flyaways around your hairline. Apply with a small brush or your fingers, focusing only on the perimeter of your style.
