How to Protect Hair with a Silk Bonnet

Wrap hair loosely in the bonnet before bed, ensuring all strands are tucked in and the bonnet sits comfortably without being too tight.

  1. Prep your hair. Start with slightly damp or dry hair—never soaking wet. Apply a light leave-in conditioner or hair oil to the ends if your hair tends to be dry. Wet hair in a bonnet creates moisture buildup that can damage both hair and fabric.
  2. Gather hair gently. For long hair, loosely twist or braid it, or gather it into a very loose bun at the top of your head. For short hair, simply smooth it back with your hands. The goal is to keep hair contained without creating tension or creases.
  3. Position the bonnet. Place the bonnet at your hairline and pull it back over all your hair, ensuring no strands escape around the edges. The elastic should sit comfortably behind your ears—snug enough to stay put but loose enough to avoid headaches or hair breakage.
  4. Adjust for comfort. Smooth down any bumps and make sure the bonnet covers your hair completely without pulling tight anywhere. Your hair should have room to move slightly inside the bonnet rather than being compressed flat against your scalp.
