How to Give Yourself a Proper Scalp Massage

Use firm, circular motions with your fingertips for 5-10 minutes to stimulate circulation and release tension.

Most people massage too lightly and give up too quickly. Treat your scalp like you mean it.

  1. Position your hands correctly. Place fingertips on your scalp, not palms. Keep nails short to avoid scratching. Your fingers should be spread wide across your head like you're holding a basketball.
  2. Start at the hairline. Begin at your forehead and temples with gentle circular motions. Apply firm pressure but not painful pressure. Your scalp should move with your fingers, not your fingers sliding over your scalp.
  3. Work systematically across your head. Move from front to back in sections, covering your entire scalp. Spend extra time on areas that feel tight or tender. The key is consistent pressure and slow, deliberate movements.
  4. Finish at the nape. End at the base of your neck where tension often collects. Use both hands to massage this area with upward strokes. Hold pressure on particularly tight spots for 10-15 seconds.
