How to Clear Dandruff for Good

Consistent use of zinc pyrithione or ketoconazole shampoo, plus proper scalp care, eliminates most dandruff within 4-6 weeks.

  1. Switch to an anti-dandruff shampoo. Look for zinc pyrithione, ketoconazole, or selenium sulfide as the active ingredient. Use it every other day initially, then reduce to twice weekly once flakes clear. These ingredients actually target the fungus that causes dandruff rather than just washing away symptoms.
  2. Let the shampoo work. Apply to wet hair and leave for 3-5 minutes before rinsing. The active ingredients need contact time to penetrate and work effectively. Most people rinse too quickly and wonder why nothing changes.
  3. Stop over-washing. Daily shampooing strips natural oils and can worsen dandruff. Stick to every other day maximum, and use a gentle regular shampoo on alternate days if needed.
  4. Brush before washing. Use a boar bristle brush or fine-tooth comb to loosen flakes before shampooing. This helps the anti-dandruff ingredients reach your scalp more effectively and prevents buildup.
