How to Add Volume to Flat Hair

Volume starts at the roots with proper prep, strategic blow-drying, and texturizing products.

Volume is architecture, not accident — build it systematically from the roots up, and your hair will thank you by holding the shape all day.

  1. Wash with intention. Use a volumizing shampoo only on your scalp, never the lengths. Skip conditioner on roots entirely — apply it mid-length to ends only. Heavy products at the root are volume killers.
  2. Apply root lift while damp. Work volumizing mousse or root lift spray into towel-dried hair, focusing on the crown and back sections. Comb through with fingers, not a brush, to maintain the lift-building texture.
  3. Flip and rough dry. Turn your head upside down and blow-dry on medium heat until 80% dry. Use your fingers to lift sections as you dry — this creates lift from the root up.
  4. Section and lift. Right-side up now, use a round brush to lift small sections straight up while blow-drying the roots. Hold for 3 seconds, then release. Work from back to front for maximum lift.
  5. Set with cool air. Blast each lifted section with cool air for 5 seconds. Cool air sets the cuticle and locks in the volume you just created.
  6. Finish with texture. Flip hair over and spray dry shampoo at the roots, then massage in with fingertips. This adds grip and texture that holds volume all day.
