How to Air Dry Hair Without Frizz

Start with damp (not soaking) hair, use a leave-in treatment, and resist touching it while it dries.

Air drying is meditation disguised as hair care—the hardest part is doing nothing.

  1. Remove excess water properly. Gently squeeze hair with a microfiber towel or cotton t-shirt instead of rubbing. Your hair should be damp, not dripping. Wet hair stretches and breaks easily, so handle it like it might snap.
  2. Apply protection while damp. Work a leave-in conditioner or light oil through mid-lengths to ends, avoiding roots. This creates a barrier against humidity and smooths the hair cuticle. Think of it as a raincoat for each strand.
  3. Shape and forget. Gently rake fingers through to detangle and shape. Then step away completely. Every time you touch drying hair, you disrupt the cuticle and create frizz. Set it and forget it.
