How to Curl Hair with a Flat Iron

Twist the flat iron away from your face while slowly pulling down the hair section to create smooth, lasting curls.

This is the only curling method that matters because you already own the tool and it gives you the most control over the shape.

  1. Prep your hair. Start with completely dry hair and apply heat protectant from mid-length to ends. Section hair into 1-2 inch pieces for even curls. The smaller the section, the tighter the curl.
  2. Position the flat iron. Clamp the iron at the root level where you want the curl to begin. Hold the iron perpendicular to the hair section, not parallel to your head.
  3. Twist and glide. Rotate the iron 180 degrees away from your face while slowly pulling it down the length of hair. Keep the movement fluid and consistent for smooth curls without kinks.
  4. Set the curl. Immediately cup each curl in your palm as it cools to help it hold its shape. Once all sections are curled, gently run your fingers through to soften the look.
