How to Curl Hair Without Heat
Create curls using wet hair, strategic wrapping techniques, and time instead of temperature.
Heat-free curls look effortless because they are—your hair moves like hair, not like sculpture.
- Start with damp hair. Wash and towel-dry until hair is 70% dry. Too wet and curls won't set, too dry and they won't form. This moisture level gives you the moldability you need.
- Apply styling product. Work a curl-enhancing cream or mousse through your hair with a wide-tooth comb. The product creates texture and hold that heat would normally provide.
- Section and wrap. Divide hair into 1-2 inch sections depending on desired curl size. Wrap each section around foam rollers, fabric strips, or even clean socks, rolling away from your face for the most flattering curl direction.
- Secure and wait. Pin or tie each wrapped section. Sleep on it or wait 6-8 hours for curls to set completely. The longer you wait, the more defined your curls will be.
- Release and separate. Gently unwrap each section and finger-comb to break up the curls slightly. Scrunch with your hands to encourage natural movement and bounce.
