How to Curl Hair Without Heat

Create curls using wet hair, strategic wrapping techniques, and time instead of temperature.

Heat-free curls look effortless because they are—your hair moves like hair, not like sculpture.

  1. Start with damp hair. Wash and towel-dry until hair is 70% dry. Too wet and curls won't set, too dry and they won't form. This moisture level gives you the moldability you need.
  2. Apply styling product. Work a curl-enhancing cream or mousse through your hair with a wide-tooth comb. The product creates texture and hold that heat would normally provide.
  3. Section and wrap. Divide hair into 1-2 inch sections depending on desired curl size. Wrap each section around foam rollers, fabric strips, or even clean socks, rolling away from your face for the most flattering curl direction.
  4. Secure and wait. Pin or tie each wrapped section. Sleep on it or wait 6-8 hours for curls to set completely. The longer you wait, the more defined your curls will be.
  5. Release and separate. Gently unwrap each section and finger-comb to break up the curls slightly. Scrunch with your hands to encourage natural movement and bounce.
