How to Do a Banana Clip Updo

Gather hair into a high ponytail, twist the length, and secure with a banana clip by sliding it under the twist and snapping it closed.

  1. Prep your hair. Start with day-old hair for better grip and texture. Brush through to remove tangles, then apply a light texturizing spray from mid-length to ends. Clean hair can be too slippery for this style to hold properly.
  2. Create the base ponytail. Gather all hair at the crown of your head, smoothing any bumps with a fine-tooth comb. Secure with a clear elastic that matches your hair color. The higher the ponytail, the more dramatic the final updo will look.
  3. Twist and position. Twist the ponytail length clockwise until it naturally wants to coil back on itself. Hold the twist against your head where you want the final shape to sit, creating a loose bun or chignon shape.
  4. Insert the banana clip. Slide the open banana clip under the twisted hair, positioning the hinge at the bottom. Press the top down to snap it closed, catching all the hair securely. Adjust any pieces that stick out by tucking them under the clip.
