How to Get a Salon Blowout at Home

Section damp hair, use a round brush with tension, and direct heat down the hair shaft while lifting at the roots.

Most people rush the sectioning because they think it's boring, then wonder why their blowout looks messy—the prep work is literally the whole technique.

  1. Prep with the right products. Apply heat protectant to damp hair, then add volumizing mousse to roots only. Your hair should be 80% dry before you start—blow-dry roughly first if needed.
  2. Section strategically. Clip hair into 4-6 horizontal sections, starting from the nape. Smaller sections give better results but take longer—find your balance.
  3. Master the brush technique. Use a round brush one size larger than your desired curl. Wrap hair around the brush with tension, roll down toward roots, then follow with the dryer nozzle pointing down the hair shaft.
  4. Work from bottom to top. Start with the lowest section at your nape and work up. This prevents upper layers from falling onto finished sections and messing up your work.
  5. Cool and set. Hit each finished section with cool air while the brush is still in place. This sets the shape and adds shine—don't skip this step.
