How to Get Loose Waves with a Braid-Out

Braid damp hair in two to four sections before bed, then gently separate the waves in the morning for soft, natural texture.

  1. Start with the right base. Work on hair that's about 70% dry—damp but not dripping. Apply a light leave-in conditioner or curl cream from mid-length to ends. Your hair should feel smooth but not heavy or wet.
  2. Section and braid strategically. Part your hair down the middle and create two to four loose braids, depending on your hair density. Start each braid about two inches from your scalp to avoid crimping at the roots. Secure with soft hair ties that won't leave dents.
  3. Sleep smart. Wrap your braids in a silk scarf or sleep on a silk pillowcase to prevent frizz. If your braids are still slightly damp, that's perfect—they'll finish drying overnight and set the wave pattern.
  4. Release and separate. Gently undo the braids without brushing through them. Use your fingers to separate larger sections into smaller waves, working from the bottom up. Scrunch lightly with your palms to encourage the wave pattern.
