How to Do a Dutch Crown Braid

Start with damp hair, Dutch braid around your hairline in a circle, and secure at the nape for an elevated updo that works on any texture.

  1. Prep your hair. Work with slightly damp hair—it grips better than clean, slippery strands. Brush through and apply a light texturizing spray if your hair is fine. Start at your right temple.
  2. Begin the Dutch braid. Take a small section at your temple and divide into three strands. Cross the side strands under the middle strand instead of over—this creates the raised effect that makes Dutch braids pop.
  3. Braid around your hairline. Add hair only from the hairline side as you braid around your head, keeping the braid close to your forehead and ears. Keep consistent tension—loose sections will make the crown uneven.
  4. Complete the circle. When you reach your starting point, continue braiding the remaining hair without adding new sections. Secure with a clear elastic and tuck the tail under the crown, pinning invisibly.
  5. Finish and set. Gently tug at the edges of each braid section to widen and soften the look. Mist with hairspray and smooth any flyaways with a small brush or your hands.
