How to Do a Fishtail Braid
Split hair into two sections and repeatedly cross small pieces from the outer edge of each section to the opposite side.
The fishtail is proof that complexity is just simplicity repeated—master the basic cross and you have endless variations at your fingertips.
- Prep your hair. Start with slightly damp or day-old hair for better grip. Brush through completely to remove tangles and create a smooth base.
- Divide into two sections. Split all your hair into two equal sections at the nape of your neck. Hold one section in each hand at the base.
- Cross the first piece. Take a thin strand from the outer edge of the right section and cross it over to join the left section. The thinner the strand, the more intricate the braid will look.
- Mirror on the left. Take a thin strand from the outer edge of the left section and cross it over to join the right section. Keep the tension even but not too tight.
- Continue the pattern. Repeat the crossing pattern, always taking from the outer edge and crossing to the opposite section. The braid will form naturally as you work down.
- Secure the end. When you reach the ends of your hair, secure with a clear elastic. Gently tug at the edges of the braid to create volume and texture.
