How to Get Perfect Flat Twist Outs

Create flat twists on damp hair with styling cream, sleep with them in, then carefully unravel for defined, elongated curls.

  1. Prep your hair. Start with clean, damp hair that's about 70% dry. Apply a leave-in conditioner followed by a styling cream or curl enhancer from mid-length to ends. Your hair should feel moisturized but not soaking wet.
  2. Section and twist. Part your hair into horizontal sections, working from bottom to top. Take small sections (about 1-2 inches wide) and create flat twists by crossing two strands over each other while keeping the twist flat against your scalp. The smaller the sections, the tighter the curl pattern.
  3. Secure and set. Twist each section all the way to the ends and secure with small hair ties or clips. Cover with a silk scarf or bonnet and sleep on it, or let air dry completely if you have time during the day.
  4. Unravel carefully. Once completely dry, gently unravel each twist starting from the ends and working up. Avoid pulling or rushing this step to prevent frizz and maintain definition.
