How to Get Perfect Flat Twist Outs
Create flat twists on damp hair with styling cream, sleep with them in, then carefully unravel for defined, elongated curls.
- Prep your hair. Start with clean, damp hair that's about 70% dry. Apply a leave-in conditioner followed by a styling cream or curl enhancer from mid-length to ends. Your hair should feel moisturized but not soaking wet.
- Section and twist. Part your hair into horizontal sections, working from bottom to top. Take small sections (about 1-2 inches wide) and create flat twists by crossing two strands over each other while keeping the twist flat against your scalp. The smaller the sections, the tighter the curl pattern.
- Secure and set. Twist each section all the way to the ends and secure with small hair ties or clips. Cover with a silk scarf or bonnet and sleep on it, or let air dry completely if you have time during the day.
- Unravel carefully. Once completely dry, gently unravel each twist starting from the ends and working up. Avoid pulling or rushing this step to prevent frizz and maintain definition.
