How to Set Your Hair with Foam Rollers
Foam rollers create lasting volume and smooth curls when used on damp hair with proper sectioning and overnight setting.
- Start with damp hair. Work with hair that's about 80% dry—not soaking, not bone dry. Apply a light mousse or setting lotion from mid-length to ends. Skip the roots to avoid weighing down your volume.
- Section methodically. Create horizontal sections starting at your nape, each section slightly narrower than your roller width. The smaller the section, the tighter the curl. Work your way up to the crown last.
- Roll with tension. Comb each section smooth, then roll from ends to roots with firm, consistent tension. The roller should sit snug against your scalp without pulling. Secure with the attached clip or a bobby pin.
- Set overnight or use heat. For best results, sleep in the rollers or sit under a hooded dryer for 45 minutes. Air drying takes 6-8 hours minimum. Your hair should be completely dry before removal.
- Remove and style. Unroll gently without pulling or tugging. Finger-comb to separate curls or brush through with a wide-tooth comb for softer waves. Finish with hairspray if needed.
